Where is Chobe National Park?

Chobe National Park is in northern Botswana. It covers around 11,700 km² and was the country’s first national park. Its best-known section, the Chobe riverfront, borders the Chobe River just outside the town of Kasane, about 80 km (around 1.5 hours by road, plus the Kazungula border) from Victoria Falls. Further south lie the remote Savuti and Linyanti regions.

Why Chobe is famous

Chobe has one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa. In the dry season, herds of hundreds gather on the riverfront to drink and swim. Boat safaris bring you closer to elephant, hippo and crocodile than any vehicle can, and there’s dramatic predator action along the banks. Game drives add buffalo, giraffe, sable, puku and the Chobe’s healthy lion prides.

Ways to experience Chobe

Join a Chobe day trip from Victoria Falls with a boat cruise and game drive, or stay longer. Our camping safaris put you in dome tents inside the park, where elephants wander past camp. Mid-range and premium options use riverfront lodges in Kasane or inside the park.

What to see and do

Best time to visit Chobe National Park

June to October is the dry season, the peak for elephant herds along the river. November to April is green, lush and quieter, with newborn animals and superb birding. See our Chobe guide.

How to get there from Victoria Falls

By road from Victoria Falls via the Kazungula border (we handle transfers and formalities), or fly into Kasane (BBK). You’ll need your passport, and a Zimbabwe visa that allows re-entry if you’re returning.

Chobe National Park: questions answered

About 80 km. It’s roughly 1.5 hours by road to Kasane plus time at the Kazungula border, which makes Chobe an easy day trip.

One day gives you a cruise and a game drive. Two or three nights let you add sunrise drives, more river time and the quieter areas.

Rhino sightings in Chobe are rare. The park is best known for elephant, buffalo, lion and its river wildlife.

Yes, with a 4×4 and park permits, but deep sand and the riverfront rules make a guided safari much easier for first-time visitors.
