Devil's Pool, Livingstone Island
Livingstone is in southern Zambia, about 10 km north of Victoria Falls on the Zambezi. From Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe you cross the Victoria Falls Bridge, which was completed in 1905, and pass through two border posts. The whole trip takes 20–40 minutes depending on queues. The Zambian side of the Falls is protected within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
Livingstone Island sits right on the lip of the Falls. It’s where David Livingstone first saw them in 1855. Guided boat trips run to the island, and when the river is low enough (usually from around mid-year to January) guests can swim in Devil’s Pool, a natural rock pool on the edge of the drop. Choose a breakfast, lunch or high tea session.
Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to white rhino, which are seen on guided walks. The town has a lively market and the Livingstone Museum, and the microlight airfield offers open-cockpit flights over the Falls.
Visit from August to January for Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island. From about October to December parts of the Zambian side can run almost dry, so the Zimbabwe side shows more water then. From March to May the island usually closes because of high water.
Livingstone Airport (LVI) has direct flights from Johannesburg. From Victoria Falls, we handle the bridge crossing. You’ll need a Zambian visa or the KAZA UniVisa, which covers Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Partly. The Falls are shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zambia’s side is reached from Livingstone and includes Livingstone Island.
Most visitors do. The KAZA UniVisa, when available, covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia. We’ll advise for your passport.
Usually from around mid-August to January, when the water is low enough. Dates vary with the river each year.
