Moremi Game Reserve covers the eastern side of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, roughly 100 km north of Maun. It was created in 1963 by the BaTawana people and named after their chief, Moremi III. It includes Chief’s Island and the well-known areas of Third Bridge, Xakanaxa and South Gate, and it borders the Khwai community concession.
Moremi is one of the few places where the permanent waters of the Delta meet dry mopane woodland. That mix supports a remarkable density of wildlife: lion, leopard, cheetah, African painted dog, elephant, buffalo and red lechwe, plus some of the best birding in Botswana. Unlike much of the Delta, it can be explored by vehicle as well as by boat.
Our camping safaris use Moremi’s public campsites, such as Third Bridge and Xakanaxa, where wildlife wanders through camp. Mid-range trips use mobile tented camps, and premium trips stay at permanent lodges such as Camp Xakanaxa.
July to October for peak game viewing. Some tracks flood from about June, so routes change with the water. The green season is lush but some areas become hard to reach.
By 4×4 from Maun (2–3 hours to South Gate), or by light aircraft to the reserve’s airstrips. It’s on our Botswana Explorer camping safari.

About 100 km, or 2–3 hours by 4×4 to South Gate. A light-aircraft flight is much quicker.
