Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’, is the largest curtain of falling water on Earth, and it’s our home.
Zimbabwe & Zambia border
Victoria Falls (VFA), ~20 km
Feb–Jun for flow, Aug–Dec for Devil's Pool
The Falls, rafting, sunset cruises
Victoria Falls is in southern Africa, on the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The town of Victoria Falls is on the Zimbabwean side. Livingstone is about 10 km away on the Zambian side, and the two are linked by the historic Victoria Falls Bridge. Botswana’s Chobe National Park is only around 80 km west, where four countries meet at the Kazungula crossing.
The Zimbabwe side faces most of the Falls’ 1.7 km width. A rainforest trail runs along it to around 16 viewpoints, from the Devil’s Cataract to Danger Point. The Zambia side gives you the Knife-Edge Bridge, the walk down to the Boiling Pot and, in low water, Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool. With a KAZA UniVisa (when available) it’s easy to see both.
The Falls are roughly 1,708 m wide and up to 108 m high, and at peak flood more than 500 million litres of water pour over the edge every minute. The spray can rise over 400 m and is visible from more than 30 km away. Victoria Falls has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989.
February to June is high water: maximum power, drenching spray and spectacular helicopter views. July and August balance strong flow with clear views. September to December is low water, when the rock face is revealed, Devil’s Pool opens and rafting is at its best. Read our month-by-month guide.
Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) is about 20 minutes from town, with direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Livingstone Airport (LVI) serves the Zambian side. We meet every arrival and handle transfers to your hotel.
